The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kaduna State Chapter, has commended the Kaduna State Government for its efforts in improving security, infrastructure development and social welfare while calling for sustained interventions to address pressing challenges facing residents.
This formed part of the resolutions reached at the association's monthly congress meeting held on Tuesday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat along Muhammadu Buhari Way, Kaduna.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, members acknowledged the state's intensified security operations, community policing initiatives and intelligence gathering efforts, describing them as positive steps towards enhancing safety across Kaduna State. However, the association stressed the need for sustained action to ensure lasting peace and security.
The congress also welcomed the recent release of more than ninety inmates, noting that the move would promote rehabilitation, reintegration and the decongestion of correctional facilities.
NAWOJ further commended the construction of a drainage control system in Rigasa, describing the project as a timely intervention aimed at mitigating flooding in the area. The association urged the government to replicate similar projects in other flood-prone communities across the state.
On matters relating to public identity and historical preservation, the congress observed that Yakowa Way remains an important landmark named after the late Governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa. Members expressed concern that the road is frequently referred to as "Sabon Hanya" by commercial drivers, a practice they said creates confusion among residents and commuters.
The association also praised the restoration of peace and security in Birnin Gwari, a community that had previously faced significant security challenges. Members urged relevant authorities to sustain the gains through continuous security presence, dialogue and economic empowerment programmes for residents.
Addressing challenges facing the association, the congress highlighted mobility constraints that affect effective field reporting, advocacy and outreach activities. NAWOJ appealed to the Kaduna State Government to provide an operational vehicle to support its activities across the state.
The congress further welcomed the establishment of new vocational institutions but called for special consideration of vulnerable groups during admissions to promote inclusiveness and equal opportunities.
Members emphasized the importance of stronger collaboration among government institutions, civil society organizations and the media, noting that such partnerships are crucial for sustainable development and improved social welfare.
In its concluding remarks, the association reaffirmed its commitment to professional journalism, gender equity and the promotion of peace and development in Kaduna State and Nigeria as a whole.
NAWOJ pledged continued support for government programmes aimed at improving the welfare of women and children while urging all relevant stakeholders to implement the resolutions reached during the congress in the interest of the people.
